  • Compensation: We ensure that our pay is competitive by taking part in extensive benchmarking activities. Each year we compare our compensation plans of our employees from functions and roles with peer organizations.
  • Stock: Symyx Technologies provides nearly all employees with opportunities to own Company stock. Stock benefits enable you to become an owner of Symyx, allowing you to share in the Company's success.
  • Stock Grants: Stock grants may include a grant of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) or, depending on grade, a combination of Restricted Stock Units and Stock Options.
  • A Restricted Stock Unit is an agreement by Symyx to issue an actual share of Symyx stock at $0 cost once vesting requirements have been satisfied. The employee pays nothing other that applicable taxes based on the value of stock on the vesting date. The value of stock at the time of vest will be equal to the market value of Symyx stock on the vesting date times the number of shares from vested RSUs.
  • "Vesting" is the period between the time a stock grant is awarded and the time an employee may exercise (purchase or sell) an option; and own the shares granted in an RSU.
  • Stock Purchase Plan: The Stock Purchase Plan allows employees to own part of the company by purchasing Symyx Technologies stock at a discount through payroll deductions. Stock is purchased at 85% of Symyx's stock price at the lower of the beginning or ending of a subscription period. Employees may invest between 1 and 10 percent of their eligible pay in this plan. Symyx stock is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange as SMMX.

As the market continues to evolve, we regularly assess our benefit programs to ensure you receive the best value and are provided with flexible options to face your individual needs.
  • 401(K) Savings Plan: All employees are eligible to defer up to 60% of their salary up to the maximum allowed by the IRS which is $16,500 (or up to $22,000 for employees age 50 and older), this 2010 calendar year. They may participate in the traditional 401(k) savings plan, a Roth 401(k) savings plan or a combination of the two. Symyx provides a 401(k) Match Program of 50% of an employee's contribution, up to 2% of the employee's salary. Our 401(k) provider is Vanguard. (www.vanguard.com)
  • Medical: Symyx offers employees coverage under an HMO (CA only) or PPO plan through Anthem Blue Cross and covers the substantial majority of the cost associated with the medical premiums for employees and dependents. Dependents may include domestic partners; however, the cost paid by Symyx is required to be taxable income. For employees in California we also offer coverage through Kaiser Permanente HMO.   • Dental: Symyx offers PPO dental coverage for employees and dependents through Aetna Dental and can be used for dental providers in and out of the provider network. Symyx covers the substantial majority of the cost associated with dental premiums for employees and dependents. Dependents may include domestic partners, however, the cost paid by Symyx is required to be taxable income. (www.aetna.com)
  • Vision: Through VSP, Symyx provides basic vision coverage for employees and covered dependents that elect Medical Coverage. These benefits include: an exam every 12 months; lens replacement every 12 months; up to $120 for contact lenses every 12 months; and up to $120 for frames every 24 months. Employees also have the option of enrolling in a "Buy Up" plan whereby frames are replaced every 12 months with a $150 allowance. Additional discounts and out-of-network benefits are also available.   • Flexible Spending Accounts: Employees may elect to participate in: the Health Care Spending Account ("HCSA") and set aside up to $5,000 pre-tax dollars; the Dependent Care Spending Account ("DCSA") and set aside up to $5,000 pre-tax dollars; and/or the Transportation Benefit which reimburses on a pre-tax basis for expenses incurred for qualified transportation fees. Reimbursements are allowed for parking (up to $220 per month), transportation in a commuter vehicle (up to $230 per month) and transit passes (up to $230 per month).
  • Disability: Symyx provides both short and long -term disability insurance ("STD" and "LTD" respectively) to cover lost wages due to any absence caused by illness or disability that is beyond 7 calendar days. STD begins on the 8th day and continues for 12 weeks, and covers 66 2/3% base pay to $2,500 per week. LTD begins on the 91st day of disability, and covers 66 2/3% base pay up to $10,000 per month.
  • Life Insurance: Basic Life Insurance of 3x annual salary is provided by Symyx for all employees. Some employees may be required to have an Eligibility of Insurance Form approved by Symyx's life insurance carrier (Reliance Standard) in order to receive the 3x annual salary amount. Employees may elect to purchase supplemental life insurance, as well as accidental death and dismemberment coverage, for themselves, as well as spouse life, and child life.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers a counseling and consultation service designed to help you and your eligible family members with a wide range of personal issues. The services are confidential and the Company has covered the cost. The Human Resources department may approve additional sessions if necessary.
  • Athletic Clubs: Symyx makes available memberships at the Decathlon Club in Santa Clara, CA, the Athletic Club of Bend, OR, Club Sport in San Ramon, CA and other approved clubs. The Company pays 50% of the employee initiation fees and half of the monthly dues for a standard membership. All other regular full-time employees who would like to participate in the Health Club Program, will be eligible to receive up to $600 each year for a membership in a health club or equivalent exercise facility. Reimbursement will only be made twice a year, July 1 and January 1, in the amount $300 (max) grossed up.
  • Travel Insurance: Symyx provides Business Travel Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance to all employees effective on your date of hire. The coverage provides all regular fulltime employees with a $100,000 benefit; payable to your beneficiary should you die accidentally while traveling on company business.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan: The Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) is a facility that allows employees to purchase Symyx stock at a 15% discount through payroll deferrals. Employee can invest up to 10% of base compensation through payroll deductions.
  • Time Off Work: Starting from date of hire, employees accrue 15 vacation days per year as well as 10 absence days (this includes volunteer time off, sick time, bereavement and jury duty). Additionally, Symyx offers 12 paid company holidays.
  • Food Service: Symyx provides an on-site cafeteria in its California offices with continental breakfast and lunch for all employees who participate in the plan.
