High Throughput Techniques Applied to Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis

Catalysis is crucial to the chemical and refining industries as it is required for the vast majority of industrial chemical transformations. Commercial catalysts are often chemically complex formulations with ill-defined structures and mechanisms of action, a situation which complicates and slows the pace of innovation. In addition, the compositional and process parameter space needed to optimize catalytic systems is very large, and traditional methods of synthesis and testing are inefficient at covering this space. More than a decade ago, Symyx pioneered the development of automated, high-throughput technologies for synthesizing and testing large numbers of catalytic materials. Our methods span the breadth of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and can greatly speed the pace of discovery of new materials. In this lecture, examples of innovation spurred using these Symyx high throughput techniques will be discussed.
