  1. What support is available for Chime?

Please note Chime is a free version offered to the public by Symyx and as such does not come with any Technical Support. Chime Pro, the commercial version comes with comprehensive Technical Support. For more information on purchase of Chime Pro, visit the following URL:

    http//www.symyx.com/products/framework/chimepro/index.jsp
  2. Download problem from the Symyx Download Center?

    PROBLEM:

Downloading from our web site requires Internet Explorer (IE) 5.0 or higher, or Netscape 5.0 or higher. If you are using an older version of the browser, you either cannot register or cannot get to the download page. An error message page will be displayed as a result.

    SOLUTION:

To upgrade your browser, please visit http://www.microsoft.com or http://www.netscape.com. If you have a spam blocker or email filters enabled, they may block the email from symyxwebregistrations@symyx.com containing your login information. Please adjust your email settings accordingly.

If, after these steps, you are still unable to download Chime, you can download various versions of Chime from the Symyx's anonymous FTP server. Please contact Symyx Support using the following link:

    http://www.symyx.com/support/contact/index.jsp

  3. Is there a tutorial? Where can I find it?

Chime tutorials can be found on the following web sites, including web sites hosted by other organizations:

    http://www.symyxchime.com/support/developer/chime/index.jsp
    http://www.chem.uwec.edu/ChimeTutDemos
    http://stingray.bio.cmu.edu/~web/chime_tut/chime.html

  4. How can I verify if Chime has been successfully installed?

To ensure Chime has been successfully installed on your system, visit either http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/diamond/inside.html (The structure is located half way down the page next to "Diamond Viewer".) or http://siggy.chem.ucla.edu. If you can see a sample file (see below), a moving "ball and stick" model of a molecule, the Chime plug-in is correctly installed and running.

  5. Are there any previous versions available for download?

The most recent versions of Chime are available on the Symyx Download Center. If you do not see the version of Chime you are trying to download, check the subdirectories of /pub on the Symyx's anonymous FTP server. Please contact Symyx Support using the following link:

    http://www.symyx.com/support/contact/index.jsp

  6. Which version runs on Microsoft Windows 98?

You can install Chime 2.6 SP3 that is available on the Symyx's Anonymous FTP Server.

  7. Which version runs on Macintosh?

2.6 SP3 is for the Macintosh users. It is also available on the Symyx's Anonymous FTP Server.

  8. Is there a plan to release Chime for Macintosh OS X?

There are currently no plans to make a version of Chime available to work with the latest browser for Macintosh platforms or to develop a version of Chime that will be compatible with the Mac OS X. The current version of Chime, 2.6 SP6, will not work on Macintosh X OS.

In the future, Symyx is planning to make a free version of Symyx Draw available. This version of Symyx Draw will act as either an ActiveX control in your web browser or as a Netscape plug-in. This component, which enables structure drawing and rendering in a web environment, is expected to be compatible with Mac OS X.

For more information on Symyx Draw, please check our web site, Products > Discovery Framework > Draw Enterprise Edition

  9. Can I distribute Chime from a network or distribute it on a CD?

Symyx makes selective grants of licenses to customers who want to use Chime over a network or redistribute it to other users. To apply, download the network and/or distribution agreement(s) below and follow the instructions provided.

    http://www.symyx.com/downloads/downloadable/index.jsp

  10. What are the hardware and software requirements for the Chime plug-in?

For the requirements for each specific version, please refer to the FAQ, "What are the hardware and software requirements for the Chime plug-in?"

    http://www.symyx.com/support/knowledgebase/faqs/faq_chime_4.jsp

  11. How can I start Chime? – I do not see the program on Menu or shortcut on my desktop

Since Chime is a plug-in for the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, you should not expect to see any related files after its installation. To start Chime, go to a web site with a structure that is rendered by Chime.

For more information, please refer to the FAQ, "If I don't see any related files after installing Chime, how do I verify that it has been installed correctly?" on our web site:

    http://www.symyx.com/support/knowledgebase/faqs/faq_chime_5.jsp

  12. How can I copy and paste structures from Chime into Microsoft Office applications such as Word or PowerPoint?

To copy structures into Microsoft Office applications, you must first copy the structure into the Symyx application (i.e., ISIS/Base, ISIS/Draw, or Symyx Draw); then from the Symyx application, copy the structure and paste it into the Microsoft Office application.

For more information, please refer to an FAQ, "How can I copy and paste structures from Chime or Chime Pro into Microsoft Office applications such as Word or PowerPoint?" on our web site.

    http://www.symyx.com/support/knowledgebase/faqs/faq_chime_6.jsp

  13. How can I tell which version of Chime is installed?

You can open a mol file (The file extension should be .mol.) in a web browser, right-click a mouse over the structure, and select "About" when a dropdown list is displayed. The version number should be displayed when a window is open.

  14. After I installed ChemDraw, Chime no longer works. What went wrong?

If you install ChemDraw on your computer, this may also install CambridgeSoft's browser plug-in, Chem3D. Chem3D will acquire the settings for the MIME types for Chime, and Chime will no longer work. As a result, you will not able to view structures using Chime. Reinstalling Chime will not resolve the issue. The workaround is to uninstall Chime and your Internet browser, and re-install your Internet browser; then, reinstall Chime. This workaround only applies to older versions of the ChemOffice software. New installations of ChemOffice do not associate the MIME type used by Chime.

  15. When I download Protein Data Bank (.pdb) files, they are saved as .pbd files (the 'd' and the 'b' are reversed in the .pdb file extension), and then .pbd files won't open in my Internet browser. How can I resolve this?

If you have installed a version of Chime prior to 2.6 SP6, .pdb files are often downloaded as .pbd files, and a message that these files are "Chime Shim Library object files" might be displayed in a file download dialog box. The file might open as a text file instead of in an Internet Explorer browser window.

Chime 2.6 SP6 fixes an installer issue to correctly register the MIME type for .pdb files. Please download this version from the Symyx Download Center.

  16. Why is a molecule not animated when I move the mouse cursor over the molecule?

If you right-click on a structure that is rendered by Chime, you should see the options displayed in the following screenshot:

When the structure file reference is put on the web page, the default settings for display can be specified. On the Nova pages http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/diamond/insidediamond.html, for example, the molecules rotate by default. To make a molecule rotate, right-click on it and select Rotation. You can also hold down the left mouse button and rotate the molecule manually.

  17. What is the difference between the Chime and Chime Pro products?

Chime is the non-fee release of Chime Pro offered to the public by Symyx and does not come with any Technical Support. Chime can only be used to create a static Web page. You cannot use Chime with Symyx's Web-based applications such as Chemscape and SMART. Chime Pro can be used to enable structure search and display in a web application.

For more information, please refer to an FAQ, "What is the difference between the Chime and Chime Pro products?" on our web site.
